The Berkel is a world known brand that is much copied, but still inimitable. This revolutionary meat slicer was invented in Holland at the turn of the nineteenth century by Wilhelm Van Berkel. It was the world’s first ham-slicing machine. By 1907, Berkel machines were being used in England, Belgium, France, Russia, China, Mexico and Canada. Very difficult to find, as Berkel stopped manufacturing them long ago, they became a desired object by many collectors who consider them functional works of art. Berkel machines last forever, and have the ability to cut paper thin slices, which is almost impossible with standard electric machines. The custom refurbishment also adds aesthetic artisan appeal. They say to slice on a Berkel is one of life’s great pleasures, and we tend to agree! Profood has several different Berkel models in stock, all restored to their original state.
